    The call we take more often than any other. On built-in refrigeration the first suspect is almost never the compressor — it is the condenser behind the grille above the door, which in a Miami kitchen collects salt, cooking aerosol and dust until it can no longer shed heat, with nothing on the display to say so.

    A cabinet where one side holds and the other does not. On a built-in side-by-side that is one machine with a delivery problem; on a pair of integrated columns it is two machines and only one of them is unwell. Which of those you have decides the entire diagnosis.

    Where the water is tells you most of what you need to know. Inside the cabinet points at the defrost drain; underneath points at the drain pan or a supply connection; in front of the door on a dispenser model points at the line in the door. On integrated cabinetry it matters more than usual, because the floor is often the expensive part of the room.

    Refrigerator door not sealing

    The problem that almost nobody calls about and that causes several of the problems people do call about. On integrated cabinetry the door carries a custom panel on hinges shimmed for its weight, and doors settle. What you see is a line that no longer matches the run; what the appliance sees is humid air, all day, every day.

    Frost you clear and that returns within days is a defrost cycle that is no longer completing, or humid air getting in faster than the cycle can remove it. Both are ordinary and both are fixable, but they are different jobs — and where the frost sits is what tells them apart.

    A sensor is a resistor that reports temperature, and when it drifts the appliance obeys it faithfully — running a cabinet warm, an oven cold, or throwing a code that names the circuit outright. It is one of the most satisfying repairs on the list because the part is measurable: either it reads what it should at a known temperature or it does not.

    Door seal replacement

    Ice makers built into a refrigerator or a bar cabinet borrow their cold from the cabinet they live in, so a good proportion of these calls are really temperature calls. The rest are water: the supply, the valve, the fill tube and the module, in that order of how often they are the answer.

    The repair reached last and reached for first by the internet. A control board is expensive, frequently blamed and comparatively rarely the problem — most of what gets called a board failure is a sensor, a harness or a connector that has corroded in coastal air. Boards are condemned here by measurement.

Column freezers, and why the pairing matters

Monogram's freezers are integrated columns — 18, 24, 30 and 36 inches, panel-ready, designed to be installed flush and very often installed as one half of a pair with a refrigerator column beside it. From the front the two are a single wall of cabinetry. Underneath they are two independent machines, and every diagnosis begins by establishing which of them you are describing.

What actually fails

In order of how often we see it: the defrost circuit, the door seal, the fans and the sensors that tell the control what the cabinet is doing. A column runs a defrost cycle to clear the moisture that every door opening adds, and in a Florida kitchen it adds a great deal. When the heater, the thermostat or the control that runs that cycle stops working, ice accumulates on the evaporator, the air stops moving through it, and the cabinet warms up while the compressor runs continuously — which is the exact complaint that arrives as "it is running all the time and it is still not cold".

The panel is part of the appliance

A custom door panel on a 36-inch column is heavy, and it hangs on hinges that were adjusted for it on the day the kitchen was fitted. Over years the door settles. A seal that no longer meets the cabinet along its full length lets in humid air continuously, and the defrost circuit — which was sized for ordinary use — never catches up. Frost that returns within days of being cleared is very often this, and the repair is an adjustment rather than a part.

Before you book

Have the model number from the cabinet in question, the temperature it is actually holding, and whether the frost or the warmth came on gradually or in one day. Those three usually decide which of the four common problems we are looking at, and therefore what the visit is likely to involve.

Frost is building up inside and I keep chipping it out.

Frost that keeps coming back is the defrost circuit failing to finish, or humid air getting in faster than the circuit can clear it. Both are ordinary and both are fixable, but they are different jobs: one is a heater, a sensor or a control that is not running the cycle, and the other is a gasket, a hinge or a door that a heavy custom panel has pulled out of line. Where the frost sits tells us a lot — an even coat across the back wall points at the defrost side, a patch near one edge of the door points at the seal. One column is fine and the one next to it is warm. Is that one repair?

No, and this is the single most useful thing to know about paired columns. They are two complete refrigerators sharing a cabinet opening and a pair of matched panels. Each has its own compressor, its own evaporator and its own control. When the freezer column drifts up and the refrigerator column beside it holds perfectly, nothing about the good one tells you anything about the bad one — so tell us which cabinet, and read us the model number off that one's plate rather than its neighbor's.

How cold should it actually be, and what does that mean for the ice cream?

Zero Fahrenheit is the number to hold, and a column that sits five degrees above it will keep food safe while ruining the texture of anything with dairy in it — which is how most people notice. If the display is showing set point but the contents say otherwise, the sensor and the display are agreeing with each other and disagreeing with the cabinet, and that is worth a visit. Put a thermometer in the middle of the load rather than in the door and give it a few hours before you judge it.
