Symptom
Monogram ice that is small cloudy or slow
Production that has tapered rather than stopped, with cubes that have got smaller and cloudier. On a standalone machine that is the signature of scale in the water circuit, and on local water it is not a matter of if but of when.

Six ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Scale on the evaporator plate
The commonest cause on local water, and the one that responds completely to descaling.
Ice machine cleaning and descaling from $175 -
A filter past its life
Restricting flow so the fill never completes.
Water dispenser and filter service from $125 -
The circulation pump
On a clear-ice machine, the moving film of water is the whole process. A tired pump makes cloudy ice.
Ice machine cleaning and descaling from $175 -
The inlet valve
Metering less than it should, so each batch is short.
Ice maker repair from $175 -
Ambient temperature
A machine in a warm bar cycles longer and yields less. Real, and often fixable by clearing the grille.
Undercounter refrigeration repair from $175 -
A condenser that cannot breathe
Same effect, and the cheapest to correct.
Condenser cleaning service from $135

01
Look at a cube in the light
Cloudy core, small and clear, or misshapen — three different stories.

02
Time a cycle
Then compare it with the manual. A machine taking half as long again is telling you something.
-
03
Check when it was last descaled
If the answer is never, that is very likely the whole problem.

04
Feel the grille
Warm air that cannot get away is a machine working against itself.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all

About Monogram ice that is small cloudy or slow
How the ice looks is the diagnosis
Cloudy ice with a white core is mineral that could not be pushed out of the freezing water — which is what scale in the circuit and a slowed pump both produce. Small clear cubes point at the fill instead. Take a cube out and look at it in the light before you describe it to anybody; it is genuinely informative.
What it usually means, by the kind of Monogram appliance
Monogram sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.
- Standalone clear-ice machines — Ice is made by freezing slowly in a moving film of water. Anything that interrupts that flow — scale on the plate, a tired pump, a restricted valve — produces exactly this.
- Nugget-ice machines — A different mechanism with an auger rather than a plate, so scale shows up as production rate and as noise rather than as cube clarity.
- Ice makers inside a refrigerator — Cube size here follows the fill and the cabinet temperature rather than the water quality, so small cubes point at the fill valve or a cabinet that has drifted.
Why this appliance in particular suffers here
An ice machine puts every gallon it uses through a freezing cycle and leaves the mineral behind. South Florida water is hard, so the deposit accumulates on the plate, in the valve and along the tubing faster than the manual's interval assumes. Descaling on schedule is the single highest-value thing an owner can do for this appliance — a plate kept clean keeps making the ice it was specified to make, and one that is not never quite recovers.

Before you book
Questions about monogram ice that is small cloudy or slow
Can I descale it myself?
You can run a descale cycle if the machine has one, and it is worth doing. What that does not do is clean the bin, the chute and the drain line, which is the hygiene half of the job.
Would a water softener help?
It would, and plenty of houses here have one for other reasons. It is a house decision rather than an appliance one, and we will tell you honestly whether your machine's problem is water or something else.
