What we can confirm

Code FTD or F56, from the manufacturer's own documentation

A code is only meaningful together with the machine showing it — the same digits mean different things on different equipment.

The code

FTD or F56

Failure to drain, shown on some machines as F56. The machine did not empty, and the checks are the drainage list. On a fully integrated machine this is displayed on the TOP EDGE of the door, which is only visible when the door is open. Most owners have never seen it.

What it narrows down to

What else belongs to the dishwashers

On this make a code belongs to the appliance rather than to a product line. These are the other conditions this machine can display, and the models that can show this one — a display often has more than one thing to say, and the model number decides what any of it costs to put right.

Other codes this appliance can display

the drain took longer than two minutes

the pump-out ran past seven minutes

the machine will not drain at all

it filled twice after a power cut

the drain finished too quickly

the water arriving is too cold

the water temperature sensor circuit has failed

the detergent cup cannot open

the power was interrupted

the detergent cup is open

a leak has been detected and the cycle stopped

a leak on Floor Protect machines, a control reset on all others

About Monogram dishwasher error code FTD or F56

What FTD or F56 means, in the maker's own words

Failure to drain, shown on some machines as F56. The machine did not empty, and the checks are the drainage list. On a fully integrated machine this is displayed on the TOP EDGE of the door, which is only visible when the door is open. Most owners have never seen it.

Where this code actually appears

On the control panel, and usually with a sound. Monogram describes their refrigerator codes as flashing green on the display and typically accompanied by a beeping, and the range, microwave and dishwasher tables all describe codes you can read from the front of the appliance. That is the opposite of some makes, where the number is written into a hidden log and never shown — here, if something is wrong, the appliance generally tells you. Photograph what it says before cutting the power, because a reset erases it and the code is most of the diagnosis.

Which machines this one applies to

Monogram fully integrated dishwashers. Monogram says plainly on their own range and oven table that they cannot list every code for every model past and present, so a code missing from their table is not proof that your appliance cannot raise it — and a code in it is not proof that yours can. The model number settles it.

What to do about it

  1. Check the drain hose, the air gap and the disposer.
  2. Clean the filter in the floor of the tub.
  3. Look for a disposer knockout plug that was never removed.
  4. If the whole path is clear, the pump is measured.
