- “Filters lose airflow long before they look dirty”
- “The termination outside is invisible from inside”
- “A sealed house cannot supply the air”
Symptom
Monogram range hood not pulling air
Airflow goes missing in three places and only one of them is the appliance: the filters, the duct and the cap at the end of it, and the make-up air that a tightly sealed air-conditioned house cannot supply. Nothing on the hood reports any of it.

Six ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Loaded filters
Baffle and mesh filters lose a startling share of their throughput before they look bad. Most are dishwasher-safe.

The termination outside

Make-up air
A powerful hood in a sealed air-conditioned house cannot remove air nothing is replacing.

What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About Monogram range hood not pulling air
Run it manually at full speed first
On the current hoods, automatic mode decides for itself and a hood that will not come on may simply have concluded the air is clean. Then hold a sheet of kitchen paper against the filters with the fan on full — it should hold there. If it falls, the hood is not moving air and the filters are the first place to look.
What it usually means, by the kind of Monogram appliance
Monogram sells one appliance in several forms, and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.
- Chimney hoods with air quality sensors — Automatic mode can hold the fan off because the sensor believes the air is clean. Run it manually at full speed before assuming anything.
- Professional hoods over a 48-inch range — Serious airflow, and therefore serious dependence on the duct and on make-up air. These are the installations where a tight house shows up first.
- Island hoods — No wall to help them and a duct run that goes up through a ceiling, so more of the resistance is out of sight.
- Custom inserts — The blower and the lighting are ordinary; the chimney around them belongs to a cabinetmaker, and the access is decided by the joinery.
The quietest failure in the kitchen
Nothing tells you a hood has lost half its airflow. The fan sounds the same and the lights still work. The evidence is a film that starts appearing on the cabinet doors beside the range and a kitchen that smells of last night — and by then it has usually been going on for a year.

Questions about monogram range hood not pulling air
How often should filters be cleaned here?
More often than the manual assumes, and much more often over a grill or a griddle. Grease plus humidity stays tacky and collects dust. Every few weeks through the dishwasher for a heavily used hood is not excessive.
What is make-up air?
The air that has to come into the house to replace what the hood sends out. In a tight, air-conditioned house there is nowhere for it to come from, so the hood is pulling against a vacuum. Cracking a window while it runs is a free test.
