# Monogram frost building up in the freezer

### Photograph the frost before you clear it

Where it is matters more than how much there is. An even coat across the back wall of the compartment is the defrost circuit failing to complete. A patch near one edge of the door, or along one side, is air getting in — a seal, a hinge or a panel that has dropped. A photograph tells us which before we arrive, and the ice will be gone by the time we get there.

### Why it accelerates

Each cycle that fails to clear the coil leaves ice the next cycle has to get through as well. Airflow falls, the cabinet warms, the compressor runs longer, and more moisture is pulled in every time the door opens. That is why this problem feels sudden when it has actually been building for months.

The defrost heater

It makes the heat that clears the coil. When it fails the ice never goes anywhere.

The defrost thermostat or sensor

It permits the cycle. A circuit that is never allowed to run looks identical to one that cannot.

It calls for the cycle. Replacing the heater when nothing ever asked for defrost changes nothing.

A door that is not sealing

Humid air continuously, which no defrost circuit was sized for.

A gasket that has hardened

Do the paper test on the door

### Can I keep defrosting it manually?

As a way to keep food safe until a visit, yes. As a way to live, no — the compressor is running against an iced coil the whole time and that is hard on it.

### There is frost in the fresh-food side too.

That points at air getting in rather than at the defrost circuit, because the fresh-food compartment is not where the coil is. Check the door first.
