### About undercounter refrigeration

Bar refrigerators, beverage centers, double-drawer units and undercounter cabinets share one engineering constraint: they breathe through a grille a few inches tall at the bottom of a door. That is the whole ventilation system. Most of these calls are decided by air before they are decided by parts — a plinth run across the grille, a coil packed with dust, or a bar area that is only air-conditioned when somebody is standing in it.

What this involves

Ventilation treated as part of the diagnosis

Ambient temperature measured where the unit actually lives

Drawer runners and seals on the drawer models

Measure the room, not just the cabinet

A bar area that is only cooled when someone is in it is a different service situation from a kitchen, and the machine feels it.

Check what the grille is breathing

Plinths run across it, dust, pet hair and cabinetry that has closed in over the years are all common and all fixable.

Clean the condenser and test the fan

In this class of appliance the margin is small to begin with, so a partly blocked coil costs more than it would on a full-size cabinet.

Then the refrigeration

Sensors, control, defrost where fitted, and the sealed system last.

Say if the appliance is in the wrong place

An indoor-rated cabinet built into an outdoor bar will keep failing, and no repair changes that. We would rather say so.

### It copes overnight and gives up in the afternoon.

That is the ambient complaint, and it is a real problem rather than something to live with. The machine has lost the temperature margin it was designed with, and the usual causes are a blocked grille, a dirty condenser or a space that has been closed in over the years. Some of them are cleaning; some of them are cabinetry.

### Can an indoor unit be used in an outdoor bar?

Only if it is specified for it, and most are not. An indoor-rated cabinet in an outdoor kitchen works for a season or two and then fails in ways that are not really repairs — corrosion at the condenser and control boards that have lived in salt air. Worth knowing before the bar is built rather than after.
