# Monogram defrost system repair

### About the defrost circuit on Monogram refrigeration

Frost that keeps returning after you clear it is a defrost cycle that is no longer completing. The circuit has three parts — a heater, something that permits it, and a control that calls for it — and each is measured separately. But half of these jobs start at the door instead: a seal or a dropped panel letting humid air in continuously will defeat a perfectly healthy defrost system, and replacing parts will not fix that.

What this involves

Heater, sensor and control tested individually

The evaporator seen, not guessed at

The door checked, because half of these start there

Look at where the frost actually is

An even coat on the back wall and a patch by one edge of the door are two different problems.

Get to the evaporator

Nothing about a defrost problem is settled without seeing the coil. Ice across it explains every other symptom at once.

Test the three parts of the circuit

The heater, the sensor or thermostat that permits it, and the control that calls for it. Each is measured separately.

Check the door before blaming the circuit

A seal or a dropped panel letting humid air in continuously will defeat a perfectly healthy defrost system, and replacing parts will not fix it.

Clear the ice and prove the cycle

The cabinet is brought back and the defrost cycle is observed doing its job before we call it repaired.

### Can I just keep defrosting it manually?

You can, and it will keep coming back, and in the meantime the compressor is running against an iced-up evaporator, which is hard on it. Manual defrosting is a way to keep food safe until the visit, not a way to live.

### Where the frost is — does that actually tell you something?

Quite a lot. An even coat across the back wall points at the defrost circuit. A patch near one edge of the door points at the seal or the hinge on that side. Photograph it before you clear it and we will have a better answer before we arrive.
