### About installing built-in appliances

Most of the long-term problems we are called out to were decided on installation day: a clearance that was shaved to make something fit, a drain with no fall, a hood ducted through one elbow too many. A built-in appliance is installed once and lived with for twenty years, and it does not get a second chance at any of that. The specification is read against the opening before anything is lifted.

What this involves

Clearances and ventilation to the specification, not to the opening

Water, gas and drain connections tested under pressure

Panels hung and doors set level with the run

Read the specification against the opening

Before anything is lifted. An integrated column that is a quarter inch tight is a column that will be fought with for two decades.

Services first

Water, gas and electrical connections made and tested before the appliance goes into a hole it will not come out of easily.

Ventilation and drainage

The parts that are invisible afterwards and cause the most trouble later: hood ducting, condenser air paths and any drain that depends on fall.

Set the appliance and hang the panels

Levelled to the cabinetry, hinges shimmed for the actual weight of the panel that is going on this door.

Commission it and show you

Run it, verify the numbers, and walk you through what this appliance wants from you — filters, cleaning intervals and the two or three things it is worth calling about early.

### Can you install an appliance we bought elsewhere?

Yes. What matters is the opening, the services and the specification, not where the box came from. If the opening will not take the appliance we will say so before it comes off the truck rather than after.

### What goes wrong most often with an installation we are asked to fix later?

Ventilation and drainage, by a distance. A condenser that cannot breathe because a plinth was run across its grille, a hood duct with more resistance than the blower can overcome, and an undercounter drain whose fall was marginal on day one. All three work at first and none of them keep working.
